Gary Cargill's Legal Research Service

It's midnight. You realize that in only days that appellate brief is due. You haven't even started it yet. And you don't have time to do it yourself ---- unless you plan not to sleep at all. Just as bad, the brief for the trial court hasn't been submitted either. The deadline is swiftly approaching. You are afraid to look up above your desk. You might see a raven sitting there lisping, "Nevermore!"

Who do you call?

Your partner suddenly decides that he doesn't want to be a lawyer anymore. He's going to find himself in the Himalayas instead. Perhaps he's intending to climb Everest. Great for him! But he leaves you in the lurch. He dumps all his unfinished work on you. And you can't say no!

You knew you should have forked over the money for a new computer last Christmas. But what can you say? You were cheap. You know that they're only good for three years anymore, but you just want to see how long you could keep the old thing humming. But now you're paying for it. You've got that motion for summary judgment to prepare, and you can't get to Lexis Nexis or West Law online. And you haven't paid a visit to the law library since . . . well . . . gulp . . . law school, and that was more years ago than you're willing to admit.

Just yesterday right before you were ready to leave that new client walked into your office with a personal injury case. You think it could have merit. But the client didn't know that the statute of limitations was ready to run --- in less than a week. You've already got a full schedule. Who's going to draft the complaint?
